Vehicular Manslaughter DUI - No Prison Time
Defendant facing 10 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence (DUI causing death) of an elderly woman. After a lengthy sentencing hearing, Ms. Anwar was able to convince the judge to sentence the defendant to an in-custody drug and alcohol treatment program and 5 years of probation. No prison time was imposed.
Assault with Deadly Weapon
Defendant charged with two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon. Facing two strikes and 5 years in prison. Through cross-examination of the alleged victim and witnesses, Ms. Anwar was able to convince the jury that the statements to law enforcement were not credible. Jury acquits on both counts. Possession and Transportation Not Guilty
Possession for sales and transportation of methamphetamine jury trial where defendant was seen by officer dropping tennis-ball sized package of controlled substances onto passenger’s lap. Passenger admitted to officer that drugs were defendants. Defendant arrested and marijuana found concealed on his person. Defendant’s phone had text messages consistent with drug sales. Ms. Anwar was able to suppress the marijuana on his person and jury found defendant NOT GUILTY of both counts.
Felony Possession Not Guilty
Felony possession of shank in defendant's property at jail. Ms. Anwar convinced the jury that it was mere circumstantial evidence and jury found defendant not guilty.
